Smart Solutions for Smart Grids

Cigre has the ability to bring together specialists and promote the most important events in the electricity sector, where relevant issues are debated and all kinds of solutions and opportunities can be found.

The Paris Biennale connects the best production of national Cigres and presents them on an international stage, allowing the integration of knowledge and people like no other event in the world.

As a showcase for the state of the art, it allows us to promote Brazil as a center of excellence in engineering and innovation, paving the way for Brazilian companies and professionals to find opportunities for international growth.

At the 2022 Biennale, Brazil introduced 53 articles and sent a suite of 95 delegates, the 4th largest at the event, with notable contributions such as:

  • The work of the president of Cigre Brasil, Saulo Cisneiros, “Evolution and Changes of the Electricity Market to Integrate DER in Brazilian Power System”, which addressed the complexity of the challenges caused by the growing mix of distributed energy resources, with consequences such as massive integration of storage resources and the impacts on the expansion, operation and regulation of the Brazilian electric system. Very current issues and of high relevance for the electric systems of all countries that integrate renewable energies.
  • Keynote by the technical director Iony Patriota, whose extensive knowledge contributed to the creation of several articles introduced, presented the theme “Brazil: an Overview of Technical and Regulatory Aspects of National Cyber Security”. This issue concerns electric companies around the world due to the increasing digitization of their systems, since, while operational gains are obtained, the susceptibility to cyber-attacks also increases.
  • Works by NGN – Next Generation Network, which aims to make successful the insertion of professionals and students at the beginning of their careers in the energy systems industry, providing technical resources and networking opportunities for personal and technical development, thus ensuring that the interests of new members are represented, both for their own benefit and for the future sustainability of Cigre.

Through Radice, I took part directly and indirectly in the creation of three of the Brazilian articles, and I had the pleasure of presenting them together with Dr. Marcos Alves:

  • “Data Science and AI for Online Diagnosis of Rotating Machines from Pre-existing Sensors, with applications in Hydro Generators and Wind Generators”: A practical approach where Data Science techniques were applied to predict generator failures from measurements of factory sensors.
  • “Application of Machine Learning and Anomaly Detection for Online Defect Identification in Wall Bushings in HVDC Systems”: Shows how we managed, even in the absence of the usual three-phase behavior, to monitor HVDC bushings, always present at critical points in the system.
  • “Application of Artificial Intelligence Tools for Optimized Maintenance Scheduling based on Asset Management Concepts”: Taking advantage of the best of information technology and sensing, the method allows the concessionaire’s administration to optimize the scheduling of work orders, providing better use of the company’s budget when while keeping the risk of the operation under control.

All articles presented are the result of complex research and development, carried out by multidisciplinary teams, including several Cigreans such as Marcos Alves, Daniel Carrijo, Gilberto Amorim, Rafael Fehlberg, Renan Ferreira, Iony Patriota and Sergio Frontin, as well as engineers from companies associated with Cigre such as Mário Luiz Pereira Alves, Fernando Alves Ribeiro, Priscila Maria Barra Ferreira, George André Marques Lacerda and Denis Pedro do Nascimento from Furnas Centrais Elétricas.

With Data Science techniques applied to renewable energies, HVDC and the administration of utilities, we showed the versatility of this technology to a highly qualified international audience, attracting the attention of national and international utilities and research institutes, such as ENEL (Italy, Brazil), TenneT (Germany), SP Energy Networks (United Kingdom), ATCO Electric (Canada), Technische Universiteit Delft (Netherlands), among others.

The exchange of experiences and the visibility that an event like this provides to those involved highlight the value of Cigre and inspires more people to contribute to the growth and perpetuation of this very important community in the electricity sector.

Sincerely,
